Conference: The Youth and City Development

The Conference: THE YOUTH AND CITY DEVELOPMENT was presented on 26th February 2008 by Dr. PEDRO MIGUEL AMARO DE BETTENCOURT CALADO - the Head of the Cultural Service Department of the Funchal City Hall. This conference aimed at calling attention to the preservation and sense of balance of Urban Areas and referred to the adaption of the city to the 21st Century youth.
The speaker started off by describing the evolution of the City of Funchal in the last 500 years, referring to demography, age distribution, and economic and cultural development throughout the centuries. Then specific city aspects concerning the “City” as a place were presented and among these was a reference to schools; cultural centres; sports facilities; swimming-pools; gyms; and others. These are considered well-accomplished and give the population a sense of hope, for even though there are insufficient funds for these, they will prosper due to their quality. There was also a reference to the youth policies that have been developed since 1979 and the importance of the youth actively participating in society.
After the speaker delivered his speech, the students enthusiastically participated in a debate. The speaker was queried about the cultural heritage, the safety, the hygiene and leisure conditions in the sports and cultural areas. The students were more interested in the latter and presented some possible solutions for some places in the city, more specifically, for the former container park and the current gypsy fair.
Optimistically, the speaker accepted the students’ suggestions and spoke about some of the actions that had already been taken.
This conference was organized with the collaboration of the Extra-Activities Coordinators.
