Conference: “Water – a Contribution to a Good Quality of Life

Escola Secundária Jaime Moniz celebrated the World Day of Water on the 22nd March 2007 with a conference under the title: “Water – a Contribution to a Good Quality of Life”. The invited lecturer– Dr. Manuel António Correia, Local Secretary for the Environment and Human Resources, spoke about this essential and vital asset, so frequently misused through attitudes without sense of citizenship.

The awareness that life depends on water seems to be but a dream for the common citizen, who acts wrongly in his daily ordinary gestures. A small effort today will prevent big future efforts. If everyone is committed, our planet will certainly change and be grateful for it.

Throughout the speech slides were presented about these issues, showing the government’s endeavour to upgrade the life quality of the citizens, namely through intervention measures, such as reforestation and new technologies. Porto Santo- a small island with scarce water resources - was presented as a good example, where basic infra-structures allowed the unthinkable: the creation of green areas. Thus, the guest lecturer encouraged the audience to become more aware and better citizens.

The conference took place in the school conference room, lasted for about two hours, and was aimed at students, teachers, administrative staff and the community in general.

Note: The conference was organized with the cooperation of the Coordinator of Extracurricular Activities and Socrates Programme – Comenius 1 Project – School Partnerships – “ProAqua”.
